GTA 6 Preorder Sales: What the $260 Million Estimate Means

Quick answer
Newzoo estimates GTA 6 generated about $260 million in its first week of preorders. See what the data covers, what remains unknown, and why bigger forecasts are not confirmed sales.
Rockstar has not published an official GTA 6 preorder sales total. The $260 million figure now circulating online is Newzoo’s worldwide estimate for the opening week of digital preorders, not a number reported by Rockstar or Take-Two.
Newzoo says its data showed roughly $180 million in digital spending across six major markets during the final week of June 2026. It then used those markets’ share of GTA 5’s historical console audience to estimate a global total of about $260 million.
That is a remarkable start if the model is close. It is still an estimate.
The GTA 6 preorder numbers at a glance
| Number | What it represents | Status |
|---|---|---|
| About $180 million | Digital preorder spending across the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain in the final week of June | Newzoo estimate based on its market data |
| About $260 million | Opening-week worldwide digital preorder spending | Newzoo extrapolation |
| $3.25 billion to $5.2 billion | Possible cumulative sales by the end of launch week | Newzoo forecast range |
| About $4.5 billion and 51 million units | Midpoint launch-week scenario using an $88 average selling price | Newzoo forecast, not a sales result |
| Official Rockstar preorder total | Units or revenue confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two | Not published |
The distinction matters. The first two figures describe a modeled preorder opening. The larger figures are a projection of what could happen by the end of GTA 6’s launch week on November 19, 2026.

Where the $260 million estimate comes from
Newzoo’s analysis covers the United States plus the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. The company estimates that these six markets account for roughly 69% of GTA 5’s lifetime console player base.
Its calculation is straightforward:
- Estimate about $180 million in digital preorder spending across the six tracked markets.
- Treat those markets as roughly 69% of the comparable worldwide console audience.
- Scale the observed figure to an estimated global opening of about $260 million.
This is not the same as counting every GTA 6 order placed worldwide. The public analysis does not provide a verified global unit total, and physical preorders are not part of the headline digital estimate.
Newzoo’s model has more substance than an anonymous social post. Its Game Performance Monitor tracks PC and console performance across thousands of games and dozens of markets. Even so, extrapolation carries uncertainty. Regional demand, edition choice, physical sales, refunds, and the mix between PlayStation and Xbox can all move the final number.
Why Newzoo calls it a record
Newzoo describes GTA 6 as the strongest opening week for preorders in its dataset. That wording is narrower than “the biggest preorder launch ever confirmed.”
The record belongs to Newzoo’s own comparable data, not to a complete public ledger of every game preorder in history. Rockstar has not released a unit count that lets outsiders make that broader claim.
There is no mystery behind the demand. GTA 6 follows one of the best-known games ever released, and its preorder campaign began with a fixed launch date, multiple editions, and years of built-up attention. Rockstar’s official announcement confirms the November 19 release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Our GTA 6 edition comparison explains what buyers actually get at each tier. That is more useful for a purchase decision than a record headline.
The $4.5 billion forecast is not money already made
The biggest number in Newzoo’s report is also the easiest one to misread.
Newzoo modeled a midpoint scenario in which GTA 6 reaches about $4.5 billion and 51 million units by the end of launch week. It also gave a wider range of roughly $3.25 billion to $5.2 billion. These figures include projected sales through launch, not just money spent on preorders.
The midpoint uses an assumed average selling price of $88. That average can sit above the $79.99 US starting price shown on the official Xbox listing because some buyers choose more expensive editions and pricing differs by market.
None of this is a guarantee. A forecast is sensitive to its assumptions, especially the share of buyers who preorder, edition mix, regional prices, and how many purchases land before or just after release.
Did GTA 6 already make $1 billion from preorders?
There is no reliable evidence for that claim.
Newzoo directly rejects the viral $1 billion preorder figure. Its own worldwide opening-week estimate is about $260 million, while Rockstar and Take-Two have not announced a total. Posts that turn a launch forecast into “money already made” are mixing two different periods and two different kinds of data.
Until an official earnings release or company statement provides a number, the honest answer is simple: GTA 6 appears to have opened strongly, but nobody outside Rockstar and its commercial partners has a complete count.
What the record claim means for buyers
It should not create a deadline.
A digital copy cannot run out because millions of other people placed an order. The useful questions are whether you want the preorder bonus, whether a premium edition is worth its price to you, and whether your platform’s refund rules leave enough flexibility.
If you are undecided:
- Compare the contents in our Standard vs. Ultimate Edition guide.
- Check the current platform steps in our GTA 6 preorder refund guide.
- Use the GTA 6 release date tracker for schedule changes.
- Verify the retailer and edition through our where to buy guide.
Preorder momentum is useful for understanding the scale of the launch. It does not tell you which edition has the best value, how the finished game performs, or whether you personally need to pay months early.
What would turn the estimate into a confirmed result
The next meaningful evidence would be a figure from Rockstar or Take-Two, ideally with a defined period and a clear split between units and revenue. An earnings report may eventually provide launch sales, bookings, or sell-in numbers, but those terms are not interchangeable.
Vice Hub will update this page if an official total appears. Until then, keep the labels attached to the numbers: $180 million is Newzoo’s six-market estimate, $260 million is its worldwide extrapolation, and $4.5 billion is a launch-week forecast. None is an official GTA 6 sales report.
